How does Oberlo work?

Oberlo was founded as a startup in Lithuania in 2015, which is part of the Baltic region in Eastern Europe. The Slimas brothers and their team (two developers and a designer) tested a few Shopify apps, but Oberlo was by far the most successful. Two years later, Shopify acquired the company for a cool $15M. The Shopify app store shows tens of thousands of installs since the dropshipping app was rebranded and additional investments were made.

In addition to importing products from AliExpress, Oberlo offers the option to customize product listings, listing updates, inventory management, and bulk order management.

Why is Oberlo shutting down? 

Considering Oberlo's apparent success over the years, it is unclear why Shopify decided to shut it down. The market is crowded with similar products, and Oberlo's customer reviews haven't always been positive (resulting in a Trustpilot rating of 2.6), but am I right in thinking this is the reason they are withdrawing from the market?

Shopify themselves keep things vague at the moment, so it's impossible to tell at the moment: “This product deprecation, which is a routine occurrence, is in pursuit of providing merchants with the best solutions to reach their customers wherever they are.”
